ChatGPT Ads Cost: How Much Does Advertising Cost in 2026?

Last checked October 27, 2026 against OpenAI's Help Center.

Short answer: there is no fixed price. OpenAI recommends a starting maximum CPC bid of $3-$5 USD, and USD-billed accounts need a $25 minimum daily budget. What you actually pay per click is set by a relevance-weighted, second-price auction and shown in your campaign reporting.

ChatGPT ads do not have one fixed price per click. OpenAI recommends an initial maximum CPC bid of $3-$5 USD, but that is bidding guidance, not a published average CPC or a guaranteed charge. Eligible ads compete through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction.

There is also a separate budget requirement: OpenAI currently lists a $25 minimum daily budget for USD-billed accounts. That is a campaign budget setting, not a minimum click price. Minimum daily budgets vary by billing currency.

To understand what advertising will cost your business, separate three numbers: your bid, your actual advertising spend and your campaign budget.

Bid, actual cost and budget: what is the difference?

TermWhat it means
Maximum CPC bidThe most you bid per click in a Clicks campaign. It influences how your ad competes.
Actual average CPCThe average cost of the clicks you received, shown in campaign reporting.
Campaign budgetThe spending limits you set for the campaign.
Payment thresholdThe amount of unpaid spend that triggers a card charge. It is not a spending cap.

The bid is an auction input. Actual cost is a measured result. The budget controls spending, while the payment threshold decides when payment is collected. Do not use these numbers interchangeably.

Does ChatGPT advertising cost $3-$5 per click?

Not necessarily. OpenAI's $3-$5 recommendation is the maximum starting bid for CPC campaigns. It does not establish:

Your campaign's reported average CPC is the figure that tells you what delivered clicks actually cost. Do not turn bidding guidance into a performance benchmark.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types. Results depend on the objective, creative, landing page, relevance and campaign setup. Any claimed "typical ChatGPT CPC" needs supporting data and a clearly defined sample.

Are you charged for clicks, impressions or conversions?

It depends on the campaign objective you choose:

ObjectiveWhat you pay for
ViewsImpressions, priced per 1,000 impressions served (CPM)
ClicksEach valid click (CPC)
ConversionsValid clicks (oCPC) or impressions served (oCPM), depending on the billing option you select

Optimizing for conversions does not mean paying only when someone converts. OpenAI states plainly: you do not pay per conversion. A conversion-optimized campaign is still charged when people click without buying, or when impressions are served without a sale.

For conversion campaigns, OpenAI also separates the Bid Cap (the most you are willing to bid for a conversion) from your actual cost per conversion. The Bid Cap is not the price charged for a conversion and not a guaranteed cost per acquisition.

What is the minimum ChatGPT ads budget?

OpenAI's campaign setup table lists a $25 minimum daily budget for USD-billed accounts. Other billing currencies have their own amounts, for example 15 EUR, 15 GBP, 25 CAD, 25 AUD and 60 ILS.

This figure applies to the daily budget setting. It is not a minimum campaign total, an upfront deposit or the price of a single ad. Check the current official table and your account settings before launching.

Is a daily budget a hard daily spending limit?

No. A daily budget is the average you want to spend per day over a 7-day period.

With an unchanged daily budget, OpenAI publishes two limits: spend on any single day will not exceed twice the daily budget, and spend over the Sunday to Saturday budget week will not exceed seven times the daily budget, in your ad account's time zone. Budget changes are subject to proration.

A campaign-total budget instead caps spending over the campaign's full duration. OpenAI calls it the stricter control for total spend. Choose daily pacing for ongoing campaigns, or a total budget when you want a fixed test amount.

Illustrative budget example: a $350 campaign

Illustration only. These are invented planning assumptions, not observed results, OpenAI forecasts or a recommended minimum investment.

Suppose an advertiser sets up a Clicks campaign with:

Planning inputIllustrative value
Campaign-total budget$350
Intended duration7 days
Maximum CPC bid$4
Assumed actual average CPC$2.50

If the campaign spent the full $350 at an average CPC of exactly $2.50:

$350 ÷ $2.50 = 140 clicks

The $4 maximum bid is not used to calculate delivered clicks. The actual average CPC is. At an assumed $3.50 average CPC, the same $350 would buy 100 clicks. Neither scenario predicts how a real campaign will perform.

This example does not estimate sales, leads, conversion rate or return on ad spend. It also excludes taxes and separately purchased services such as creative production or campaign management.

A daily-budget setup behaves differently. At an unchanged $50 daily budget over a full Sunday to Saturday week, the published rules allow up to $100 on a single day, within a $350 weekly limit. That is not a promise the campaign will spend the full amount.

When does OpenAI charge your card?

ChatGPT Ads uses postpay billing: you are charged after ads are delivered.

For card-billed accounts, OpenAI charges your saved payment method when unpaid spend reaches your account's assigned payment threshold. Any remaining balance is charged at the end of the month.

The threshold is a charge trigger, not a spending limit. Taxes can make a card charge higher than the threshold amount. Accounts on postpaid invoicing can also set an optional daily account spending limit in Ads Manager under Billing, Account limits.

How should you evaluate your actual cost?

Start with the campaign's reported spend, average CPC or CPM, and the business outcome you set out to measure:

Keep the date range, conversion definition and attribution settings the same when you compare results.

Do not judge a new campaign on incomplete data. OpenAI says attributed conversions can take approximately 24-48 hours to appear, so recent cost per conversion figures can change as reporting catches up.

Before launching, decide the outcome you want, the total amount you are prepared to spend testing it, and the cost per result your business can support. A low click price alone does not make a campaign profitable. What matters is whether those clicks produce valuable outcomes at a sustainable total cost.
